This section had two major passes; this version is the less complicated one. I finally just decided that this is the one thing you gotta be able to do as a writer: you have to be able to write in character. I shouldn’t have to explain how to do that; as a fiction writer, that’s the bare minimum of getting the job done.
But WOW did I agonize over that decision first!
