Indypub: Mobile Device Apps, Part 2

So here’s my list of mobile OSs that people are probably using on their smartphones and mobile tablets, in no particular order:

  • Symbian
  • Android
  • iOS
  • Blackberry OS
  • Windows Phone
  • webOS

Now, to break it down to applications.

iOS:

  • iBooks – built into the iPad.  Available as a free download for iPhone.  Connects to iBookstore
  • Kindle for iPad.  Connects to Amazon/Kindle store.
  • B&N Nook for iPad.  Connects to B&N.  Can’t yet handle non-B&N books (unlike actual Nook).
  • Kobo for iPad.  Connects to Kobo Reader store.
  • Google Books.  Connects to Google eBookstore; have to be online all the time to read, looks like?
  • Bluefire (get library content and Sony content)
  • Ibisreader (not an app; works on all kinds of platforms; can use Dropbox)
  • Stanza.  Purchased by Amazon.  Works with pretty much anything, can use Dropbox.  Can purchase books from Smashwords, BooksonBoard, Fictionwise, and more.

Info from ZDNet, but it seems iBooks, Kindle, Nook, and Kobo are almost always listed as recommendations, with Stanza showing up from time to time.  Various PDF-only readers also exist.

Android:

  • Aldiko – I use this from time to time; it shows up a lot.  Uses Feedbooks, O’Reilly, All Romance, Smashwords.
  • Moon+ – having trouble finding out where they get books from.
  • Kindle.
  • Nook.
  • Sony Reader.
  • Kobo.
  • Google Books.
  • RepliGo Reader ($4.99)(syncs with Dropbox; annotations and comments)
  • OverDrive Media Console
  • Inktera.  Uses Inktera ebook store.
  • GoSpoken.  Uses GoSpoken ebook store.
  • Wattpad.  Uses Wattpad ebook store.
  • Wordaholic Reader.  Uses Feedbooks.
  • Ebook Reader.  Uses Feedbooks, Gutenberg, Manybooks, Booksinmyphone, Freecomputerbooks, Freetechbooks, and Onlinecomputerbooks.
  • Txtr.  Uses txtr.com.
  • Laputa Reader.  Uses Gutenberg, Manybooks, Blazer, Avaywan, Shucang, others.
  • FBReader.  Kind of uses Feedbooks.

Info from MobileRead.com, which has itself a ton of ebooks in various formats.  Aldiko keeps showing up at other places, along with Kindle, Google Books, Kobo…yeah.  Various names keep coming up from this list.

To be continued…
